SINGAPORE PLASTIC INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (SPIA) was officially formed on 28th November 1989 as a result of the amalgamation of the following four associations:
Singapore Plastics Manufacturers' Association
Singapore Polythene Packaging Association
Singapore Plastic Mould & Moulding Manufacturers' Association
Singapore PVC Leather Goods Association
Today, the sole representative body of the plastic industries in Singapore, SPIA is a non profit-making trade organization. SPIA's membership comprises of multinational organizations as well as large, medium and small enterprises that represents virtually every aspect of the plastic industry, from the manufacturers of plastic molding, plastic extrusion, plastic blowing, PVC and leather products to companies engaging in the manufacturing and supplying of raw materials, machinery and equipment and services.
SPIA is governed by an Board of Directors of 17 members who are elected during alternate Annual General Meetings. The Board of Directors holds regular meetings once every two months.
Internationally, SPIA has consolidated itself by being affiliated to the ASEAN Federation Plastic Industries (AFPI) and the Asia Plastic Forum (APF) in 1991. Both memberships have provided ample opportunities for the members to meet regularly with their counterparts from the ASEAN and Asian region to exchange views and information on the plastic industry and more importantly, to establish business networks and links.
SPIA was also selected as the AFPI Permanent Secretariat since March 1995. The appointment has elevated the Association's position as the center of coordination for the plastic industry in ASEAN. One of the major functions of the Permanent Secretariat is to coordinate the ASEANPLAS plastics exhibition with Messe Dusseldorf, the organizer of the world's most reputable plastic show - the "K Show".
